3SQN Fitters Re-Live the Good Times

BROTHERS:  3SQN with three of their Mirages gather at Butterworth.

MEMORIES of good times and un-shaken friendships in South East Asia flooded back when a special group of fitters and their partners reunited in 2008 in Penang, Malaysia.

In February, 1969, 3SQN deployed to RAAF Base Butterworth.  The squadron had just taken delivery of its brand-new French-designed Mirage fighter aircraft and was manned with a reasonably young complement of personnel. No group was younger or more enthusiastic than the squadron’s airframe fitters.

This group bonded well and developed into a very close-knit unit that was held in high regard for its work ethic and friendship on and away from the flight-line.  Despite the passing of the years and individual movements, this camaraderie has remained steadfast.  More than 40 people made the trip to relive their memories from so long ago.  It was a great testament to the strength of how well they had blended, that so many people jumped at the chance to get together once more.

While some had returned to Penang over the years, many were shocked by how much had changed.  All were impressed by the new ‘Boatie’, but disappointed by the run-down state of the RAAF Club.

The RAAF put a group of young men together and sent them overseas 39 years ago.  The friendships that we developed are as strong today as when we landed at Butterworth back in the early days of ’69.
